Complete Step-by-Step Pilgrimage Instructions with Sunnah Practices

Before You Travel

1. Spiritual Preparation

  • Make sincere intention (Niyyah).
  • Pray two raka'at and ask Allah for ease.
  • Read Surah Yaseen and Surah Al-Fath before journey.
  • Seek forgiveness from family & friends.
  • Write a short list of personal duas.

2. Travel Preparation

  • Valid passport (6+ months).
  • Umrah visa approval.
  • Hotel & transport confirmations.
  • Zamzam-safe container for return.
  • Currency (Saudi Riyal).

3. What to Pack

  • Ihram cloth (men).
  • Loose, modest clothing (women).
  • Tasbih, prayer mat, small Quran.
  • Unscented soap, shampoo, wipes.
  • Comfortable walking slippers.

Ihram Rules

Men

  • Wear two unstitched white sheets.
  • No covering the head.
  • No stitched clothing.
  • No perfume or scented items.

Women

  • Wear modest Islamic clothing.
  • No face covering (niqab).
  • No gloves.
  • No perfume or scented items.

Step-by-Step Umrah

1. Entering Ihram

Perform ghusl, pray two raka'at, and recite Talbiyah continuously:

“Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk...”

2. Arriving at Masjid al-Haram

Enter with right foot and recite the dua for entering the mosque.

3. Tawaf (7 Circuits)

  • Begin at Hajar al-Aswad.
  • Say "Bismillah Allahu Akbar".
  • Walk anti-clockwise seven times.
  • Make dua and dhikr while walking.

4. Two Raka'at at Maqam Ibrahim

Pray two raka'at, then drink Zamzam water.

5. Sa’i Between Safa & Marwah

Walk seven rounds remembering the faith of Hajar (AS):

  • Safa → Marwah is one.
  • Marwah → Safa is two.
  • Men may jog between the green lights.

6. Cutting or Shaving Hair

  • Men: Shaving head is best (or trim).
  • Women: Trim a fingertip length.

Sunnah Etiquettes & Recommended Acts

  • Keep your voice soft and respectful.
  • Help other pilgrims whenever possible.
  • Avoid arguments, pushing, or impatience.
  • Make dua at every important point (Safa, Marwah, Maqam Ibrahim).
  • Recite Surah Ikhlas, Falaq, Naas frequently.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Taking photos excessively inside the Haram.
  • Pushing or rushing during Tawaf.
  • Wearing perfume during Ihram.
  • Covering face (for men) or wearing niqab (for women).

Recommended Duas

  • Dua for forgiveness of parents.
  • Dua for Rizq and halal livelihood.
  • Dua for protection from trials.
  • Dua for acceptance of Umrah.
  • Dua for entire Muslim Ummah.
